Quilt Doodle Designs 2016 Block of the Month

Check out the Quilt Doodle Designs has released their materials list and the first row for January.
It is adorable.

Remember to print off the pattern for each row during the month it is released.  It is free the month it is released, after that you will have to pay a small fee on Craftsy.

Thursday Happenings & Links for BOM

Today I will be taking some time off to attend a funeral.  Our friend and chiropractor's mother passed away.  The visitation and funeral are all this morning.

Then I will be back home quilting.  I have another quilt partially loaded.  Its a wild hot pink, lime green and black quilt.  I love that I get to use my lime green Glide thread on this one.  Here's a glimpse of the quilt.  I was auditioning threads.

Tonight is my guild meeting.  May is our challenge month.  I am looking forward to seeing the entries as the challenge was to use your "stash" as much as possible and explore the possibility of doing a modern twist on a traditional pattern.  I quilted one guild member's quilt and I am hoping she wins a prize.  I did not get anything made to enter this year.  Tomorrow I will post as a "Friday Finish" the quilt I quilted.

Are you working on the two free Block of the Months with me and my friends?

Have a great day!

Design Wall - Frigid Temps

Its not fit for man nor beast today.  I am thankful for a warm home, running water, and electricity.
I am praying my husband will have a safe day at work and traveling home.  He works in Rock Island, IL, about 65 miles from our home.  Interstate 80 was clear on his trip to work but the car thermometer read -20 without the wind chill.  We also have about a foot of snow on the ground.  I don't remember these frigid temps since about 1983, when I had frozen water pipes and lost the walls in our bathroom due to water damage.
Yesterday's view of snow.

Last night most of the factories closed in town and the schools are closed.  Several roads were closed due to drifting.  Today the County closed their offices and the State offices are closed throughout the state.  That never happened the 34 years I worked for the state.

This morning I actually slept in until 9 am, now that never happens.  I hopped out of bed and got going quickly as the dogs were barking with their legs crossed.  After getting them let out and then warmed up, I tackled the dirty dishes in the sink.

Finally, headed down to the sewing studio.  I had set out my two blocks for Quilter's Garden 2013 Block of the Month.
This is block 15 called Luther's Landing designed by Carol Hopkins Designs.

Block 16 is called Emancipation Proclamation by Evonne Cook of Clothesline Quilts.
By completing our blocks each month, we get our names put in a drawing for a $10 gift certificate.  That has been a great motivator and I have been blessed with winning a couple of times throughout the year.  My friend, Kathy O., encourage each other by texting back and forth.  She is also trying to finish her blocks today.  It will be interesting to see if we have our Garden Club meeting as the weather may interfere with travel.

I have also worked a little on my Celtic Solstice, chain piecing HSTs.
Slowly I go, step by step!  I know I will love it when its done and love the reveal of the pattern completion.  I have thrown last year's mystery, Easy Street, on the bed and love seeing its bright, cheery colors keeping us warm each night.

Tuesday Tip - BOM

I have talked about Block of the Month before.  I try to complete the block or blocks as soon as the pattern is released each month.  That way it is done and I don't have to worry about playing catch up.

What I would like to share today is how I store the blocks.  See my "expensive storage system"?  The first three hangers are BOM.  The back hanger with the flying geese is a small quilt awaiting quilting.

I use pant hangers to hold my Block of the Month projects.  Here are my Country Threads blocks.

Here are my blocks for the Legacy Sampler from Quilter's Garden.

Above is a pant hanger with the little metal clips that you pull up, then insert your item between the black tabs, and then push the clips back down into place.   I do NOT recommend this type of hanger.

I do recommend the type that has the spring release clips that you just pinch and insert your item into the clip.  My blocks have been hanging this way throughout the year and do not find that they stretch while hanging.  I am very pleased with the results.  This nice thing about this method is I had these items on hand and I don't have another tub filled with a project I can't see.  When shopping and someone offers me the hangers, I say yes.  This method is budget friendly and leaves more money for fabric, patterns and notions.

Have a terrific Tuesday!  Say a prayer for the folks in Washington effected by the tornado.  There are many families displaced this holiday without a home to celebrate in.  They have received about 6 inches of snow and things are at a standstill.

Design Wall

I have had limited time to sew.  To unwind from the day, I have stolen about 15 minutes or so to sew.
I had cut two block parts out thinking I would be able to sew while visiting my dad but that never happened.

I am working the Legacy Sampler BOM at Quilter's Garden in Princeton.  The two blocks below are the blocks for September.

Below is The Battlefield Block.  9 1/2" unfinished

The second block is Cooper's Star.  9 1/2" unfinished

Today I will be driving eight quilts down to Peoria for the Gems of the Prairie Show on Saturday and Sunday.

I also hope to visit The Quilt Corner in Morton, IL.  They have three new owners and today is their Grand Opening.

When I return home in the afternoon it will be time to warm up the longarm machine and back to quilting for customers.

I have linked up with Judy at Patchwork Times today.

Have a motivational Monday!!

Thursday Tip

I have been trying not to start new quilts and work on UFO's.  Haven't been totally successful at that resolution, so the new quilts I have started I have stayed caught up with each month.

I am working on two Block of the Month (BOM) quilts:  Country Threads free BOM and Quilter's Garden Legacy Quilt.  My TIP is complete each BOM assignment as soon as you get it.  If you complete the blocks at the first of the month, then you stay on track, and there is no catching up or stress at the end of the month.  Quilter's Garden offers a $10 gift certificate drawing for those who complete their blocks.  I am using my drawer of Thimbleberry fabrics to complete the Country Threads BOM.

Below are the two blocks (12 1/2 inch and 6 1/2 block).

Below are the two blocks for May at Quilter's Garden.

Satisfaction!

Satisfaction.....there is nothing like the feeling of completion of a job well done.  I have quilted these quilts in the last 10 days and it feels good.  These are both customer quilts.  (No quilts were damaged in these pictures.  The quilts have sheets underneath them to protect their backings.)  My wonderful husband assisted in placing the quilts safely in the yard and snapped a few shots.
The top quilt is a Block of the Month project completed by my customer at the Fulton Retreat and sent home with me for quilting.  Here is a closer picture of it still on the longarm.

This quilt is also a customer's quilt created from a fabric strip exchange.   With this quilt there was so many possibilities.  The layouts were too numerous.  I will post mine in the near future.  I used back for my background, here the background is the lavender.

Have a great weekend.  Hope you can be outside and enjoy the nice weather.  Terry
